SIBAT undertakes water and power rehabilitation in Guiuan, Eastern Samar under PROJECT PAGBANGON

With two water tanks constructed, distribution pipes lay down and 32 tap stands installed in strategic areas, Brgys Buenvista and Banaag of Manicani Island, Guiuan, Eastern Samar would soon have their water distribution system restored to normal after being damaged by typhoon Yolanda.   Buenavista‘s water system is solar powered while Banaag is gravity-fed.

The rehabilitation of another water system in Brgy. Casiguran of Homonhon Island and the installation of solar home lighting systems for priority beneficiaries in 4 barangays of Manicani Island and in Brgy Inapulangan in Homonhon Island – are scheduled for the last quarter of 2015.

The water rehabilitation and solar home lighting installations are the assigned tasks for SIBAT under a multi-agency rehabilitation effort of the members of the Philippine Misereor Partners, Inc. (PMI) under Project Pagbangon.

This medium-term post-disaster rehabilitation and development program of the Philippine Misereor Partners (PMPI) in the Philippines.  The goal of Project Pagbangon is to contribute to the rehabilitation and development of a sustainable island ecosystem and a disaster resilient communities, with an empowered citizenry as key stakeholder.   The program is being implemented in the islands of Homonhon and Manicani in the Municipality of Guiuan, Eastern Samar.

The other partners of the rehabilitation efforts include SIKAT (for coastal resource management), TAO-Kalisakan (for shelter and evacuation center), PECOJON (for communications and advocacy), INAM (for integrative health), MAG (policy advocacy on rights-based approach to health), and CABIOKID (for land resource and sustainable agriculture).

This project envisions empowered communities including vulnerable groups to proactively participate and collectively decide in activities that will improve their lives and dignity. The project hopes to reverse the degradation trend of the island ecosystems caused by anthropocentric disturbances.

Under its assigned tasks SIBAT aims to complete all water and solar home lighting reconstruction and installation infrastructures in the first half of 2016, to be followed up with capacity building and organizational strengthening for the communities.  To manage and sustain their projects.
